Grab Bar Installation in Kennewick, WA

Speedy's Handyman installs grab bars in Kennewick and across the Tri-Cities: by the toilet, in the tub and shower, and at entry steps, anchored into studs or solid blocking, including through tile. We also build handrails and ramps and add non-slip treads, so you or your parents can stay safe at home.

One call, one invoice. We handle the repairs, and when your project needs plumbing, electrical or HVAC, we hire licensed pros we trust and fit them into the schedule. Call (509) 518-3320.

What makes a grab bar installation safe?

A grab bar is only as strong as what it's fastened to. A towel bar held by drywall anchors will pull out the first time someone puts their weight on it. ADA guidelines call for a bar and its mounting to hold 250 pounds, and we pick bars and fastening meant to meet it in homes too.

  • Into studs. We locate the studs and screw the flanges into the framing. On 16-inch stud spacing, a bar whose flanges land 16 or 32 inches apart catches two studs; other lengths can be mounted at an angle or need backing.
  • Into blocking. During a bathroom remodel, or when the wall is open anyway, we add solid wood blocking between the studs so bars can go exactly where they're needed, now or later.
  • With rated anchors when there's no stud where the bar has to go: anchors made for grab bars, never ordinary plastic or toggle anchors.
  • Through tile. We drill tile with the right bit at slow speed so it doesn't crack, and seal every hole so water can't get behind the wall. In Richland we've installed grab bars through bathroom tile.

Where should grab bars go?

We start from ADA-style placement and then adjust it to the person who'll use the bar, because a bar at the right height for a tall husband may be wrong for his wife.

  • Height: horizontal bars usually sit 33 to 36 inches above the floor.
  • By the toilet: a side-wall bar of at least 42 inches, plus a bar on the wall behind when there's room.
  • Tub: a horizontal bar on the long back wall, and a vertical bar at the end where you step in and out.
  • Walk-in shower: a vertical bar at the entry and a horizontal bar on the wall you lean toward, near the controls or a shower seat.
  • Entry steps and halls: a vertical bar beside the door or a handrail along the steps.

How does a grab bar visit work?

  1. Call or text (509) 518-3320 and tell us who the bars are for and which rooms.
  2. Walk-through. We watch how the person gets on and off the toilet and in and out of the tub, and mark where their hands actually go.
  3. Find the framing and decide on studs, blocking or rated anchors for each bar.
  4. Install and seal the bars, including through tile or a fiberglass surround.
  5. Pull-test every bar with full body weight before we leave, and clean up.

What about handrails and entry steps?

Many falls happen at the front or garage steps, not in the bathroom. We add handrails on one or both sides of entry steps, secure loose railings into solid framing, rebuild worn steps and add non-slip treads. For a doorway with a raised threshold, a threshold ramp smooths the step for a walker or wheelchair. When someone is coming home from the hospital, call early and tell us the date; we'll plan the most important items first.

FAQ

Senior Safety & Accessibility: common questions

How high should a grab bar be installed?

Most horizontal grab bars go 33 to 36 inches above the floor, which follows ADA guidelines. We fine-tune the height to the person who'll use the bar after watching how they move in the room.

Can you install a grab bar where there's no stud?

Yes. We first try to catch studs, sometimes by angling the bar. If the bar has to go between studs, we add solid blocking when the wall is open, or use anchors rated for grab bars. We never hang a grab bar on plain drywall anchors.

Can you install grab bars on tile or in a fiberglass tub surround?

Yes. We drill tile carefully so it doesn't crack, anchor into framing or rated backing, and seal every hole against water. We've installed grab bars through bathroom tile in Richland.

Which grab bars does a tub need?

Usually a horizontal bar on the long back wall and a vertical bar at the entry end for stepping in and out. A walk-in shower usually gets a vertical bar at the entry and a horizontal bar on the side wall.

Do you build wheelchair ramps?

Yes. Speedy's builds wood wheelchair and entry ramps, plus threshold ramps for doorways.

Can you add lighting in a dark hallway or stairway?

Yes, with plug-in and battery motion lights for halls and stairs. Hardwired lighting goes to our sister company, Speedy's Electrical.
