Cabinet Refinishing in Kennewick, WA

Speedy's Handyman does cabinet refinishing in Kennewick and across the Tri-Cities. Cabinet doors and drawer fronts go back to our 1,500 sq ft climate-controlled shop on W Clearwater Ave and are sprayed in a commercial-grade paint booth, while the frames are finished on site. We refinish interior doors, front doors and trim too.

One call, one invoice. We handle the repairs, and when your project needs plumbing, electrical or HVAC, we hire licensed pros we trust and fit them into the schedule. Call (509) 518-3320.

Why refinish cabinets in a shop instead of your kitchen?

Most cabinet painting happens in the kitchen, with plastic on the counters and a brush or roller on the doors. Speedy's takes the doors, drawer fronts and loose parts to our 1,500 sq ft climate-controlled shop in Kennewick and sprays them in a commercial-grade paint booth. The booth pulls overspray and dust out of the air, and the shop holds a steady temperature, so the finish levels out smooth and cures properly instead of drying with brush marks or dust in it. You keep using your kitchen while the doors are with us.

How does cabinet refinishing work, step by step?

  1. Look at the boxes first. We check the cabinet boxes, face frames, hinges and any water damage under the sink before quoting refinishing.
  2. Label and remove every door, drawer front and piece of hardware so each one goes back where it came from.
  3. Clean and degrease. Kitchen grease is the main reason cabinet paint peels, so every part is cleaned before sanding.
  4. Repair, sand and prime. Dings, chips and worn edges are filled, everything is scuffed for grip, and a bonding primer goes on.
  5. Spray in the booth. Color coats are sprayed in the paint booth and left to cure in the climate-controlled shop.
  6. Finish the frames on site with the kitchen masked off.
  7. Reinstall and adjust. Doors go back on with the hinges adjusted so the gaps line up, plus any new pulls or knobs you picked.

Should I refinish or replace my cabinets?

Refinish when the boxes are solid and you like the layout. That's most kitchens with wood or plywood cabinets, even ones with dated oak doors. You keep the countertops, backsplash and plumbing as they are, and there's no tear-out.

Replace when the boxes are swollen or delaminated from a leak, when particleboard is falling apart at the hinges, or when the layout itself doesn't work. Sometimes the answer is in between: refinish most of the kitchen and replace one damaged sink base or a single door. In Pasco we replaced and color-matched one kitchen cabinet door. In Richland we built new plywood cabinet doors with a routed inset edge, then primed and sprayed them to match.

What else goes through the paint booth?

Interior doors, bi-fold doors, front doors, trim boards and furniture. In Kennewick, we took a set of interior doors back to the shop to recondition and refinish them, then installed and caulked the trim on site.

What colors and finishes can you spray?

White, off-white, greige, deep blues and greens, and black, in a satin or semi-gloss sheen that wipes clean. We can match an existing color from a door or drawer you bring in, which is how a single replacement door ends up blending with the rest of the kitchen.

Can scuffed trim be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Scuffed baseboards and chipped door casing are repaired in place and blended into the finish around them, and new runs of trim can be primed and sprayed in the shop before they go up.

FAQ

Cabinets, Doors & Trim Refinishing: common questions

Who does cabinet refinishing in the Tri-Cities?

Speedy's Handyman refinishes kitchen and bathroom cabinets, cabinet doors, interior doors, trim and furniture for Tri-Cities homeowners. Doors and parts are sprayed in Speedy's 1,500 sq ft climate-controlled shop with a commercial-grade paint booth, and owner James Hoidal has 30 years in the trades.

How long will my kitchen be without cabinet doors?

The doors and drawer fronts are usually at our shop for several days while they're prepped, sprayed and cured. The cabinets stay usable the whole time, and we give you the schedule when we quote.

Does refinishing cabinets cost less than replacing them?

Refinishing keeps your existing cabinet boxes, countertops and plumbing, so it usually avoids the cost of new cabinetry and the disruption of a tear-out. Speedy's quotes each job for its scope so you can compare.

Can you refinish oak cabinets in a white or painted color?

Yes. Oak doors are cleaned, sanded and primed with a bonding primer before the color is sprayed, so the paint grips. Oak grain can still show slightly through paint, and we'll show you what to expect before we start.

Can you replace just one cabinet door and match it?

Yes. We've replaced and color-matched a single kitchen cabinet door in Pasco and built new plywood cabinet doors in Richland, then sprayed them to match the rest of the kitchen.

Can you refinish a front door?

Yes. Speedy's refinishes and repaints front doors, interior doors and bi-fold doors, spraying them in the paint booth when they can come off the hinges.
